NUMORA

Industrial Design / UX

Spring 2019

The project was a collaborative effort of Zach Ludlow (Graphic design) & Dennis Tsai (Product design).

Due to privacy and confidentiality, we were not able to acquire as much research materials as we would like to. However, we took this as an opportunity to explore the possibility of software and hardware for such medical condition.

Problem

Diabetes product nowadays has complicated and incohesive system, generates massive medical wastes, and has steep learning curve for people with diabetes and their caretakers.

Solution

Numora provides people with diabetes an opportunity to gain a holistic picture of their body condition by establishing products ecosystem, simplifying data inputs, and providing analytical insights.

The system contains 3 components - an insulin pump, insulin pen, and an insulin hub. All devices are synced with users’ smartphone to keep track of their daily and long-term usage.

Reusable & Refillable

The insulin pump and pen are designed to be reusable and refillable. The electronic parts such as PCB and batteries are kept and only the needles are changes for hygienic reason.

Experience

We designed the insulin pump to minimize medical waste and maximize the efficiency of the use of insulin. It uses two arrays of micro-needles. One for injecting insulin and one for testing glucose levels.

The built-in continuous glucose meter allows the pump mechanism to adjust the doses immediately based on the reading.

The insulin pen provides users with an all-in-one solution for injecting long-acting insulin. Based on the reading, the built-in laser glucose meter will automatically adjust the amount of insulin that it injects.

SYNCHRONIZATION

Data from all devices are synchronized and analyzed by the Numora app. This helps users to keep track of their day to day record. With photo recognition, users can record what they consumed for each meal. Reports are generated based on the everyday data and are also shared with doctors to ensure the doctors are in sync for the next patient visit.

CMF

The CMF aims to give users a warm, approachable, yet elaborate feeling.

The metallic finished base on the hub set the tone for the system, giving it a home feeling rather than a medical device. The white body conveys the idea of a clean, professional, and precise device.

Accent colors are placed on the touchpoints of the insulin pen and patch, giving them a nice touch of color and also guide the users' eye on where to interact.

APPROACH

For me, a project starts with understanding current products and how they work. We acquired diabetes products and supplies and were able to experience some of them ourselves.

NORMALIZING DIABETES PRODUCTS

Form exploration was also very important because one of our goal is to normalize diabetes products. People see and interact with them everyday and we think the products should have personality and make users feel comfortable to use them.
